 Know Your Rights

Your Rights | Your Auto | Your Decision

Times have changed. The automotive collision business has seen many changes over the
years.
Going from a shop driven industry to an insurance driven industry. Resulting in the
sacrifice of
safety and quality to achieve speed and inexpensive repairs. It is time for someone
to educate the
consumer about their rights when it comes to collision repair.

Know your rights. Understand your options. There are many internet sites available to assist
you
in making an intelligent decision about the safety and value of your automobile. Insurance
companies can only recommend a shop for your auto repairs. They cannot make you take
your
auto to their recommended shop for an estimate or for repairs. In the auto repair industry
this
is called steering. The insurance companies have contracts with certain shops to steer
work to
them. In return the shop agrees to do these repairs as cheap and as fast as possible.
The result
can lead to faulty or unsafe repairs and can diminish the value of your vehicle by
using
aftermarket parts.

All aftermarket (a/m) parts are made in China or Taiwan and should not be confused with
factory
OEM (original equipment manufactured) parts. These a/m parts do not have the same
structural
safety as factory parts. They have not been tested and have no crash rating. This is
very
important to the safety of you, your family and the people on the road around you.

Any car still under a factory warranty should only be repaired with factory/OEM parts. Failure
to
use factory/OEM parts may result in voiding your warranty and diminishing the value of
your vehicle. Reconditioned bumpers and wheels could be a safety issue and may not have
the
fit and finish you need to maintain your vehicle’s value.

LKQ stands for like, kind, and quality. What is really means is used factory parts. This is
perfectly
acceptable in some repairs, but not suspension or mechanical repairs. Don’t let
insurance
companies convince you otherwise.

Choose a shop that repairs your auto to factory specifications and offers warranties that cover
all
procedures and parts replaced or repaired. Only a repair shop can offer this type of warranty
on
your car.

When purchasing an insurance policy, make sure you understand what it covers on your auto
as
far as parts replacement. Ask for OEM parts coverage, some insurance companies do offer
this
type of policy.

Don’t be afraid of Big Insurance! Don’t let them tell you what to do! You pay their salaries, they
work for you. When they start paying your car note and your insurance premium, then they can
tell
you what to do.

A cheap, fast repair does not ensure safety and quality. Support your local, independent repair
facilities where these issues are given the importance they deserve.

Remember, driving an auto is a privilege! YOU PAY FOR IT!
